Quote of the Day: Spiro Agnew

"A spirit of national masochism prevails, encouraged by an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals."

Muttered by Spiros Anagnostopoulos, also known as Spiro Angew, Vice President under Richard Nixon. He resigned in October 1973 after allegations of tax evasion. He was talking about that damn liberal media, circa 1969.

After Agnew made this comment, buttons and bumper stickers that said "Another effete snob for peace" began popping up in lefty circles.

That Agnew sure had a way with a phrase -- when I was growing up, my dad used to love calling me and my brother "nattering nabobs of negativism" whenever we were grousing about something.

Hey Andy-- I noticed you knew all about my favorite conservative, Barry Goldwater, too. How do you know all this stuff?

And another thing -- did you ever read Spy Magazine when it was out? Graydon Carter and Kurt Anderson created some brilliant, dare I say Safire-esque turns of phrase, like "churlish dwarf billionaire" to describe the chairman of CBS during the 80s and "short-fingered vulgarian" to describe Donlad Trump.

I assume this is the Andy of Armitage Heights Clarion fame. I've really been enjoying it. For those of you that haven't clicked on the link on the right column of my blog, check out: http://armitageheights.blogspot.com/

It's quite good.
